The best early food sources in Sons of the Forest

In a survival scenario, securing food is crucial, and Sons of the Forest accurately reflects this urgency. While obtaining food may not be as immediately critical as finding water, establishing a food source remains essential. This guide aims to assist you in achieving that.

With the release of the 1.0 version of Sons of the Forest, many players are revisiting the game to refresh their knowledge of its fundamentals. If you enjoyed its Early Access phase, you may recall some useful tips, but the game now offers a wealth of content. In Sons of the Forest, there are numerous methods to procure food, ranging from traditional hunting to more unconventional practices, such as processing deceased cannibals into sustenance. The game presents a plethora of options!

Getting food early in Sons of the Forest

Upon spawning, it’s vital to collect all MREs and packaged goods scattered from the helicopter crash. As you familiarize yourself with the game mechanics over several in-game days, these prepared meals can sustain you and facilitate the establishment of a base.

However, as MREs deplete, you’ll need to rely on the island’s resources for sustenance. Berries and mushrooms are readily available and advisable to stock up on, providing both food and hydration, making them invaluable in emergencies.

Yet, berries alone won’t suffice for long-term sustenance, highlighting the importance of hunting and trapping skills. Fortunately, finding animals, especially on the beach populated with seagulls, presents ample opportunities for food acquisition.

Consuming raw meat is ill-advised in Sons of the Forest. While cooking offers a temporary solution, utilizing the drying rack proves superior. With the ability to dry up to six pieces of meat simultaneously without constant supervision, the drying rack streamlines the preservation process, albeit with a considerable curing duration.

Eating cannibals in Sons of the Forest

In dire circumstances, consuming cannibal body parts may be an option, although not one we recommend unless you’re inclined to emulate Hannibal Lecter.

Setting aside the unsettling nature of this practice, it appears that consuming human flesh is not inherently problematic in Sons of the Forest. Unlike its predecessor, which featured a ‘Sanity’ meter that diminished upon committing cannibalism, the sequel lacks such mechanics. Hence, while resorting to cannibalism is possible, the island offers an abundance of alternative food sources, rendering human flesh consumption unnecessary.
