Diablo’s reign faces constant challenges from emerging contenders. Last Epoch was once hailed as the potential Diablo 4 usurper, with mounting anticipation prior to its full release on Feb. 21. Now that Last Epoch is available, how does it fare against the ARPG titan?
In 2023, my expectations for Diablo 4 were high. I dove into the game upon its release and thoroughly enjoyed traversing the storyline with friends. While occasional plot gaps didn’t deter me, the end-game fell short of expectations. At a certain point, Diablo 4’s state deteriorated to such an extent that players were left adrift, sparking my anticipation for Last Epoch.
Having experienced both titles, I naturally found myself pondering a Last Epoch versus Diablo 4 comparison and have formed a solid opinion on which one merits your attention.
Should you play Last Epoch or Diablo 4?
While each game boasts its own merits, I believe Last Epoch surpasses Diablo 4. Comparing the two directly, Last Epoch exudes a sense of passion, whereas Diablo 4 feels overly industrialized.
Originating as a fan endeavor, Last Epoch took its initial strides with developers contributing in their spare time. Despite a notably smaller budget, Last Epoch delivers greater depth and a more gratifying end-game experience. Moreover, Last Epoch’s $35 price point complements these aspects, offering better value compared to Diablo 4, which commands a $70 price tag.
For me, Last Epoch’s loot and crafting systems stand out. Obtaining Legendary items feels more fulfilling, aided by the loot filter, which streamlines grinding. Last Epoch’s crafting mechanics also feel more comprehensive compared to Diablo 4’s Artisan system.
However, it’s important not to overlook Diablo 4 entirely. Visually, Diablo 4 reigns supreme, boasting superior aesthetics compared to Last Epoch. Yet, this visual prowess isn’t surprising given Diablo 4’s larger budget. Overall, Last Epoch emerges as the victor—unless your primary concern lies solely with graphics.
