Is Helldivers 2 open-world?

If you’re about to undertake your inaugural mission and are curious about the extent of the Sol system you can explore in Helldivers 2, here’s what you need to understand about whether Helldivers 2 qualifies as an open-world game.

Is Helldivers 2 an open-world game?

Despite its expansive interstellar setting, Helldivers 2 doesn’t incorporate open-world mechanics. Those seeking quests, NPC interactions, and unrestricted exploration won’t find these features in Helldivers 2. While you can venture to various planets to fulfill your active Operation mission, the scope for exploration is notably restricted.

You have the freedom to roam, but with hostile territory at every turn, navigating minefields, and a confined combat zone, you may opt to prioritize mission completion and swiftly extract afterward.

Exploration in Helldivers 2 primarily entails gathering resources (Samples, ammo, Super Credits, and support weapons), clearing Outposts, and fulfilling optional secondary objectives. These activities yield additional XP and cash for the Super Destroyer but are non-essential aspects of the planets in Helldivers 2. Moreover, the area available for free movement is further constrained by the restricted area timer along the map perimeter, leading to mission failure if you stray too far.

Furthermore, Helldivers lack the ability to swim. While many planets feature vibrant ecosystems and bodies of water, swimming isn’t part of the Helldiver’s skill set. Consequently, taking a dip in any lakes can swiftly result in repercussions, as swimming wasn’t included in their training regimen. Hence, when admiring the scenery, it’s imperative to remain mindful of the designated combat zone boundaries at all times.
