Occasionally, the seemingly ordinary can hold extraordinary treasures. Here’s how to locate the Mundane Chest in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Chest of the Mundane Location
The Mundane Chest rests upon the first-floor balcony of the Arcane Tower, precisely at coordinates X:37, Y:265.
If you’ve ventured into the Underdark, chances are you’ve crossed paths with the heavily guarded Arcane Tower. Despite its formidable defenses, breaching its barriers proves rewarding.
To access the balcony, you must stealthily navigate past the magic turrets protecting the tower. These turrets are impervious to conventional attacks, necessitating alternative approaches. Personally, I separated my party and sent a single member, aided by the Invisibility spell, to slip past undetected. If you lack such spells, entering turn-based mode and crouching can also aid in evading the turrets. Remain vigilant for the red zones and swiftly seek cover to avoid their fire.
Upon reaching the Arcane Tower, bypass the main entrance and look for an open window on the left for entry. However, be cautious of the turrets lurking within. Once inside, head to the balcony door on your right, where the Mundane Chest awaits.
Approaching the Mundane Chest triggers a Perception check. Upon success, you’ll discern its magical aura. While its contents may initially appear mundane, the magic manifests when looting it.
Items taken from the Mundane Chest reveal their true nature in your inventory. Among its treasures lie a Scroll of Protection from Evil and Good, Mystra’s Grace boots, Scroll of Mage Armour, a Gold Ingot, and a Hearthlight Bomb.
How to Use the Mundane Chest Like a Bag of Holding
Update: Following BG3’s patch, the Mundane Chest no longer functions as a Bag of Holding. While items can still be stored within it, their weight remains unchanged. Furthermore, the chest cannot be removed from the Arcane Tower anymore. Thus, its utility is now limited to serving as a unique storage item.
Before the patch, the Mundane Chest reduced the weight of its contents to .05 each, facilitating efficient item storage. However, there was a weight limit, with the reduction ceasing after 125 items were stored.
Once the weight limit was reached, finding a merchant or employing other characters as loot carriers became necessary.
To utilize the Mundane Chest, you simply picked it up, weighing 20kg at the time, and added it to your inventory. Then, select the items you wished to store and drag them over the chest, seemingly accommodating an infinite amount.
How to Find the Underdark and the Arcane Tower
While the Mundane Chest holds promise, reaching the Underdark and the Arcane Tower is essential to reap its benefits. Fortunately, multiple entry points to the Underdark exist:
- In the Blighted Village, descend the Whispering Depths chasm beside the Matriarch Phase Spider.
- In the Goblin Camp, infiltrate the Defiled Temple.
- In Waukeen’s Rest, locate the Zhentarim Hideout and descend via the lift.
- In the Riverside Teahouse, access Auntie Ethel’s teleporter in her basement.
Once in the Underdark, follow the southernmost path to reach the Arcane Tower. Though challenging, the journey rewards you with what was once Baldur’s Gate 3’s sole Bag of Holding, cleverly disguised as the Chest of the Mundane.
