How to Get Shards of Agony in Diablo 4

The Shard of Agony is a crucial item required for summoning Duriel, an endgame boss in Diablo 4. Obtaining it involves gathering several Aberrant Cinders and navigating the challenges of Helltide.

Where to Obtain Shards of Agony in Diablo 4

To acquire a Shard of Agony, players must confront Grigoire, the Galvanic Saint, on World Tier 4 within the Hall of the Penitent. Defeating this boss requires offering five Living Steel at the altar within the boss chamber. While there’s no guarantee of obtaining the Shard on the first attempt, persistence usually pays off.

The first time I defeated Grigoire at level 78, my loot consisted solely of armor. It wasn’t until I reset the Hall of the Penitent and fought Grigoire again with another five Living Steel that I obtained the Shard of Agony.

How to Obtain Shards of Agony:

  • Gather five Living Steel during Helltides.
  • Offer them at the Hall of the Penitent.
  • Defeat Grigoire, The Galvanic Saint.
  • Collect the Shard from the loot.

Confronting Grigoire is advisable for players at or above level 75, equipped with adequate gear and progress in the Paragon board. His lightning damage and traps pose significant challenges to under-prepared characters.

To acquire Living Steel, search for Tortured Gifts of Living Steel during Helltide events. While each chest costs 275 Aberrant Cinders, higher World Tiers may yield up to three Living Steel per chest.

How to Utilize Shards of Agony in Diablo 4:

Two Shards of Agony are required to summon Duriel in the Gaping Crevasse. Additionally, players need at least two Mucus-Slick Eggs from Varshan. Continuously farming these items is necessary for challenging Duriel and obtaining some of the game’s best Uniques. While Duriel may not pose as formidable a challenge as Lilith, players should ensure their build is well-prepared before engaging in the battle. In the meantime, investing time in defeating lower bosses like Grigoire is advisable.
